Xiaomi's XRING O3 Chip Breaks 4GHz Barrier, Escalating Custom Silicon Race

Chinese smartphone maker confirms its second-generation in-house processor exceeds 4GHz clock speed, a mobile industry first, as it debuts on the Mix Fold 5 foldable with 68% efficiency gains.

Xiaomi has confirmed its XRING O3 custom chip features a prime core clocked above 4GHz, making it the first production mobile processor to cross that threshold. Lu Weibing, president of Xiaomi's smartphone division, announced the chip will debut on the Mix Fold 5 foldable smartphone, expected to launch in China in August 2026. The company claims 68% improved energy efficiency and a 25% GPU performance boost over the predecessor XRING O1. The chip uses a new three-cluster CPU architecture with Prime, Titanium, and Little cores, departing from industry-standard naming conventions. Leaked technical details suggest the prime core reaches 4.05GHz, while Titanium cores clock at 3.42GHz and efficiency cores at 3.02GHz. The XRING O3 represents a complete architectural redesign from the O1, which launched in May 2025 and has shipped over one million units across three devices. Xiaomi has committed 50 billion yuan over ten years to chip research and development, with 13.5 billion yuan spent through April 2025. The O3 will be manufactured on TSMC's 3nm process, the same node used by its predecessor, while competitors Qualcomm and MediaTek are moving to 2nm nodes for their 2026 flagship chips. The chip lacks compatibility with international 5G frequency bands, effectively limiting the Mix Fold 5 to the Chinese market at launch.

How could this affect you
Traced by who's actually in the path of this β€” not everyone is.
Likely
If you're a smartphone supplier to Xiaomi
Xiaomi's custom chip strategy could reduce its reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek processors, potentially shrinking order volumes as the company shifts flagship devices to in-house silicon. The XRING O1 already displaced Snapdragon chips in the 15S Pro, and the O3's deployment on the Mix Fold 5 suggests Xiaomi is expanding the share of devices powered by its own processors.
Likely
If you manufacture advanced semiconductors
Xiaomi joining Apple, Google, and Samsung in custom chip development adds another major customer pursuing in-house silicon, which could accelerate demand for advanced foundry capacity at TSMC while pressuring the merchant chipset market. Industry sources indicate Xiaomi may extend the XRING O3 beyond smartphones into tablets and electric vehicles, broadening the competitive scope.
Direct
If you invest in Chinese semiconductor development
The XRING O3 marks the first mainland Chinese design to achieve a 4GHz mobile processor, demonstrating domestic capability in advanced chip architecture despite technology restrictions. Chinese state media characterized the XRING O1 as bringing domestic chip design closer to international advanced levels, and the O3 continues that trajectory with a significant architectural leap in only one generation.
