Xi calls for end to 'might makes right' logic, rallies Global South at BRICS Summit
Chinese President framed rejection of power-based international order as defense of sovereign equality, proposing five initiatives for deeper BRICS cooperation on AI, trade, and technology.
Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a forceful challenge to Western-led global order at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Sunday, declaring that the logic of 'might makes right' should have been discarded and calling on Global South nations to jointly defend the rule of law in international affairs. Speaking at Session II of the summit, Xi asserted that international law must be applied equally to all countries 'free from double standards' and that international rules should be written by all countries, not monopolized by powerful ones. Xi's remarks came as BRICS nations, meeting at the bloc's 20th anniversary, had adopted the New Delhi Declaration emphasizing commitment to a more just, equitable and representative multilateral system. The Chinese leader used the metaphor of a world without rules as 'a crossroads without traffic lights, where chaos and disorder are all but guaranteed,' framing the issue not as opposition to existing order but as defense of law-based governance. Beyond the rhetorical flourish, Xi tabled five concrete initiatives aimed at deepening BRICS cooperation and tightening Global South ties: an open-source AI community to advance cooperation on large language models, a special economic zone partnership to facilitate trade and investment, a digital ecosystem cloud platform for technology exchange, expanded cooperation in intelligent manufacturing, and talent development programs. These proposals position China as architect of alternative governance frameworks in technology and trade. The remarks come amid escalating US-China competition on AI and trade, ongoing Middle East tensions which BRICS nations expressed deep concern about, and broader contestation over the shape of global institutions. Xi's call for Global South solidarity frames BRICS not merely as an economic bloc but as a counterweight to what he characterized as power-based international relations.
