Germany Arrests Second Ukrainian Suspect in 2022 Nord Stream Pipeline Explosions
Croatian authorities detained a trained scuba diver identified as Vladimir Z. in Pula, accused of planting explosives on Russian gas pipelines to Germany
German federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that Croatian police arrested a Ukrainian national in the coastal city of Pula on a European arrest warrant. Vladimir Z., identified as a trained scuba diver, is accused of being part of a group that planted explosives on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022. The suspect faces charges of jointly causing explosions, anti-constitutional sabotage, and destruction of infrastructure. He will be extradited to Germany to face trial. This marks the second arrest in the case. In July, German prosecutors charged former Ukrainian army officer Serhii K., who was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany in November. Prosecutors allege Serhii K. orchestrated the operation while acting on behalf of Ukrainian state entities, a claim Ukrainian authorities say they lack sufficient information to address. The first suspect has denied involvement. The underwater explosions on September 26, 2022, severely damaged three of the four pipeline strings, halting Russian natural gas flows to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Prosecutors say the alleged aim was to permanently cut off gas deliveries and prevent Russia from using energy revenues to finance its military campaign in Ukraine. Germany is the only country still investigating the blasts after Denmark and Sweden closed their probes in early 2024, citing jurisdictional limitations.
