India and Belgium Sign 10-Deal Defence Pact; Brussels Assures No Pakistan Cooperation
Belgium's PM Bart De Wever visited New Delhi to launch co-production agreements on rockets, ammunition, and naval systems, with an explicit commitment that Belgian defence technology will not reach Pakistan.
India and Belgium signed a comprehensive defence framework and 10 industry-level agreements on September 3, deepening cooperation on co-development and local manufacturing of military hardware. The deals cover 70mm rocket assembly in India with Thales Belgium and Kalyani Strategic Systems, ammunition production lines, naval mine-countermeasure systems, counter-drone technology, and tank turrets. The framework also establishes regular defence dialogue, military training exchanges, joint exercises, and maritime-security cooperation. The agreements were signed during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Belgian PM Bart De Wever, and separately between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Belgian Defence and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken, who led a delegation of 15 Belgian defence companies. Brussels explicitly assured New Delhi during the discussions that it will not supply critical military equipment or technology to Pakistan, a commitment that addresses India's longstanding concerns about arms transfers in South Asia. Belgium's positioning reflects broader geopolitical strategy: Minister Francken cited China's growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and stated that European and Asian security concerns are interconnected, making defence partnerships with India strategically vital. The two countries plan to develop a joint industrial roadmap for defence cooperation and aim to double bilateral trade from $13 billion over five years.
How could this affect you
Traced by who's actually in the path of this — not everyone is.
Direct
If you're tracking India's defence manufacturing autonomy
India gains local production capacity for critical systems (rockets, ammunition, naval mine-countermeasure vessels) via technology transfer with European partners, reducing import dependency while building co-production ecosystems with EU members.
Likely
If you're concerned about South Asian military balance
Belgium's explicit no-Pakistan commitment signals European willingness to tier defence cooperation in the region, favoring India. If other EU members follow suit, Pakistan's access to certain advanced systems could narrow, shifting regional military dynamics.
Possible
If you follow European security strategy
Belgium's framing of Indo-Pacific security as integral to European security could shape EU defence policy toward deeper Indo-Pacific engagement and technology-sharing, positioning India as a strategic hub rather than a client buyer.
Likely
If you're an Indian defence contractor or supplier ecosystem
Access to Belgian and European co-production partnerships, technology standards, and global supply chains could accelerate indigenisation while opening export pathways via European firms, expanding Indian defence industry scale.
