Canada, India Rush to Finalize Trade Deal by December G20

Prime Minister Carney says both nations have made 'good progress' and aim to wrap up a comprehensive economic partnership by the mid-December summit in Miami, where Modi is expected to visit Canada afterwards.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday at the UN General Assembly that Canada and India are on track to conclude a comprehensive trade agreement by the G20 summit scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami. Carney said the two countries have made good progress in negotiations and that he and Indian PM Narendra Modi have committed to reaching a deal by that deadline. Modi is expected to visit Canada around the same time, though no precise date has been finalized. The two nations formally launched the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations in November 2025, targeting $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030—a significant increase from current levels. Four rounds of negotiations have been completed, with the fifth round set to begin October 5. The rapid economic rapprochement marks a sharp reversal from the deep diplomatic rupture that followed the 2023 killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, which former Prime Minister Trudeau linked to Indian government agents. Carney has moved quickly to rebuild ties, making India part of a broader effort to double Canada's non-US trade over the next decade.

How could this affect you
Traced by who's actually in the path of this — not everyone is.
Likely
Businesses in technology, agriculture, and critical minerals seeking market access in Canada or India
A completed CEPA would reduce tariff barriers and create predictable frameworks for investment and trade across goods, services, digital trade, and skilled mobility, enabling companies to enter new markets
Likely
Canadian exporters and supply chain managers seeking to reduce dependence on US markets
A successful trade deal with India diversifies Canada's export destinations and trading relationships, aligning with the Carney government's stated goal of doubling non-US trade over the next decade
Possible
Investors in renewable energy, uranium, and critical minerals
The CEPA is expected to include provisions on energy cooperation, nuclear ties, and critical mineral supply chains; a completed deal could unlock financing and supply agreements in these sectors
