As Xi arrives in Delhi, China calls for 'strategic' approach to India tensions

Beijing urges New Delhi to view their fractious relationship from a long-term perspective ahead of the first presidential visit to India in seven years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, his first visit to India since 2019. Just hours before his arrival, China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning signaled Beijing's diplomatic intent: the two countries would work to "properly handle differences" and approach their relationship "from a strategic height and long-term perspective." Xi is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday evening at Bharat Mandapam, marking the third consecutive year the leaders have convened—following meetings in Kazan and Tianjin. The Modi-Xi talks are expected to focus on border stabilization measures along the disputed Line of Actual Control, trade and investment expansion, and economic engagement restoration. This framing—emphasizing patience and strategic restraint—reflects China's attempt to anchor the relationship beyond the 2020 military standoff in Galwan Valley that killed 20 Indian and 4 Chinese soldiers. Since August, both sides have taken incremental steps toward normalization: resuming direct flights, easing visa restrictions, and restarting high-level border negotiations through Special Representatives talks. Yet substantial military deployments persist along the Himalayan frontier, and normalization remains incomplete.

How could this affect you
Traced by who's actually in the path of this — not everyone is.
Likely
If you are an India-focused investor or business stakeholder
Sustained border stability and resumed economic engagement could reduce supply-chain friction and improve market access for Indian exporters to China; conversely, failed talks could prolong restrictions on Chinese investment and technology imports.
Possible
If you monitor regional geopolitics or U.S.-India relations
A consolidated India-China rapprochement could reduce India's strategic dependence on the U.S., complicating Washington's Indo-Pacific positioning; stable ties could also reduce the space for U.S. diplomatic leverage in South Asia.
Likely
If you follow multilateral institutions and BRICS dynamics
Resolution of India-China tensions could unlock more decisive BRICS coordination on trade mechanisms, payment systems, and development finance—currently limited by mutual suspicion and divergent strategic interests.
